I went to the official Seagate website, but not one word about warranty length. I find that very disturbing. Anyone know the warranty length?

I bought some that were 'Sold by Oceanside Store and Fulfilled by Amazon' and the Seagate web site said they were OEM drives that did not have an end-user warranty. Each drive was in a white box branded with OceanSide Marketplace. I also bought some that were 'Sold by: Amazon.com LLC' and these arrived in the normal brown boxes with the black inserts; and Seagate's site clearly displays a warranty ending 2 years (and 1 month) from now.

Seagate USB devices have the serial number printed on the external case. For others, please see Document ID: 213111. 1. Seagate is the #1 manufacturer of hard drives and storage solutions worldwide. Research, comparison shop and find the best deal here.
  2. Drive-only models don't. Select a drive-only model if you (1) already have a GoFlex cable or adapter, or (2) want a faster interface than USB 2.0, like USB 3.0, eSATA, or FireWire® 800. 2 The amount of memory (measured in gigabytes or terabytes) that can be stored in a disc drive. Usually given as formatted capacity (see format operation).
  3. Find Model and Serial Numbers Instructions to find a serial number (S/N) on the Seagate, Samsung Maxtor and LaCie drives. Your product serial number is a unique identifier that allows us to look up information about your product and its warranty.

It appears Seagate does not provide a warranty on this bare drive, since it was not intended to be sold directly to a retail customer. I see no mention about a warranty on the Amazon web page for this bare drive. The price difference probably makes it worthwhile to buy a retail-packaged drive, rather than a bare drive with no warranty. Dear Sean Brady:
Thank you for contacting Seagate Support.
I will be happy to assist you with your inquiry. Selling OEM drives is a legitimate practice. OEM companies, such as HP, DELL, Apple, etc., sometimes order excess quantity of drives. They can and do sell their excess drives to third-party retailers, who can then sell them to consumers. I would be nice that said company's would put an advisory that drives that come from OEMs would not have a Seagate warranty. If you are within the return window for the drive, I would see about returning the unit and then purchasing a unit directly from an Authorized Retailer.

I understand that customer's many not be willing to understand or are upset with us because of how OEM drive warranties operate. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do to prevent this.
I hope that this information is helpful. Please reply to this email if you require further assistance or call us at 1-800-SEAGATE. We are available from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Central Standard Time Monday - Friday.

'If you purchased the product in a European Economic Area Member State, you will receive the longer of your applicable product warranty period or two (2) years. The warranty period for all components other than the main product is ninety (90) days from the documented date of your purchase or two (2) years if purchased in a European Economic Area Member State.'
So, correct me if I'm wrong, but if you just buy seagate peripherals, like drives and stuff, in America, you only get 90 days? But if you purchased it in Europe, you get 2 years? see less

I just check mine here:
http://support.seagate.com/customer/en-US/warranty_validation.jsp?form=0
I've had it for a little over 1 year, and it says 'out of warranty' so I'd assume 1 year.

Newegg has it listed with a 2 year warranty. Haven't found anything to state otherwise....yet. C'mon Amazon, we expect better information. Warranty periods definitely play a major role in my hard drive purchases since I've had to use warranties in the past.

I received my 4TB drive today and I checked my S/N on seagate and it has a 3 year warranty according to them.

Answer: NO SEAGATE WARRANTY IF PURCHASED FROM OCEANSIDE. I just confirmed on the Seagate website that the drive I purchased was OEM not intended for retail sale and NOT COVERED BY A SEAGATE WARRANTY. BEWARE

LESS THAN 2 YEARS for the drive I received (and returned) today. Very sneaky, making you wait to receive the drive before telling you what the warranty is!

Hard disk drives use firmware, which is a combination of hardware and software, to determine how to operate. The firmware is a built-in chip on the device that contains programming code. You can change the firmware on a Seagate HDD as a troubleshooting method. Businesses, before purchasing a replacement device, can update the code on the chip to see if the drive's performance improves. This can save the business money and the time it would take to move important business-related documents from one drive to another. You can download firmware updates from the Seagate website.

1.

Download Drive Detect from the Seagate website (see Resources).

2.

Launch the EXE file. Write down the model number, which can be found under Drive Name, and the serial number of the drive.

3.

Go to Download Finder (see Resources). Enter the serial and model numbers into the appropriate fields.

4.

Choose your country from the drop-down menu. Read the license terms and select 'I Agree to Seagate's End User License Agreement Terms and Conditions.'

5.

Enter the CAPTCHA and press 'Submit Query' to look for new firmware updates.

6.

Check the results to see if an update to the firmware is available. Select the link to download the Firmware Update Utility.

7.

Run the EXE file following download and follow the on-screen prompts to upgrade the firmware on the Seagate hard drive.

Tips

  • If the Firmware Update Utility detects that the firmware is incompatible with the hard drive, the application will abort.
  • You do not need to update the firmware if the version on the website matches the revision number in Drive Detect.

Warning

  • Back up your files prior to updating the firmware, because problems during the upgrade process could render the drive inoperable.
